Bin gerade über Flightradar24 gestolpert (und hängen geblieben). Es handelt sich dabei um eine Übersichtsseite, die aktuelle Flüge aufzeigt, sofern das Flugzeug mit dem entsprechenden Transponder ausgestattet ist:
“Flightradar24 shows live airplane traffic from different parts around the world. The technique to receive flight information from aircraft is called ADS-B. That means the Flightradar24 can only show information about aircraft equipped with an ADS-B transponder. Today about 60% (about 30% in USA and about 70% in Europe) of the passenger aircraft and only a small amount of military and private aircraft have an ADS-B transponder.”

Eine Alternative zu Flightradar24 — jedoch mit anderer Zielsetzung — ist das Angebot der DFLD (Deutscher Fluglärmdienst e.V.).
Wer sich eher für den Schiffsverkehr interessiert, wird auf marinetraffic.com fündig! Mal schauen ob ich das Boot eines Bekannten im Mittelmeer finde. 
Die Positionierung der Schiffe erfolgt über AIS:
How the vessels positions are recorded?
The system is based on AIS (Automatic Identification System). As from December 2004, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requires all vessels over 299GT to carry an AIS transponder on board, which transmits their position, speed and course, among some other static information, such as vessel’s name, dimensions and voyage details.
Schon sehr spannend was alles möglich ist!
